Just a simple couple of quick reviews for you headbanging heathens out there. Some unorthodox blackened doom, death doom with strange clean vocals, kvlt as fuck black metal from Norway and a denim clad heavy metal masterpiece from Canada!

rorcal_creon_coverRorcal hails from Switzerland and their sound on Creon is a blend of a shit ton of genres. They have moments of progressive melodic undertones while maintaining a blackened consistency throughout the riffing….all while somehow conjuring up a doom styled groove and atmosphere as vocals pour out over the music in an angry manner. Lengthy songs are a chore to get through if you want instant satisfaction but those who maintain and indulge into the music will be in for a rather great surprise of song writing.

URSA_COVER_SMLNovembre is an Italian death/doom band that is a little on the subtle side of things. Don’t let me choice of words sway you though as the melodic passages of slow churned death and sorrow are welcoming to my ears. The vocals are hit and miss as I feel the clean vocals, while enjoyable, are just okay at best. The raspy scowls and screams are a better fit, even if it feels unnatural at times with the particular composition at hand. Ursa is an interesting album for sure, something I think you old school doom fans will enjoy. If Agalloch was less black metal and more death then you’d get Novembre. Fantastic guitar and bass tone, great song writing and a nice change of pace.

ragnarok coverRagnarok is black metal. From Norway. So of course it’s going to fucking rule. Right? I mean it’s rare that a black metal band from the mother land sucks. As a matter of fact, Ragnarok is bringing the black metal that I need right now with their newest album Psychopathology! Well executed riffs meshed with sinister content and evil melodies really stick out. Drums and bass provide much more than just rhythm as the power and sheer strength of this band pours from these instruments. Production is great, vocals are a fine example of what some of the best black metal screams can be and you just have to headbang to this while it plays. There is no way around it. Highly recommend you all listen to this one!

Album_Cover_-_Striker_-_Stand_In_The_Fire_2016Striker is a heavy metal band from Canadian land and holy sheep shit this album is good. It’s not often I dabble in the demin clad, leather jacket genre that is heavy metal but sometimes there are some quality gems foudn within. Striker is one of them and their new album Stand In The Fire is one of them that is definitely good. CAtchy guitar writing, great guitar solos, intense vocal work, drums that don’t quit and bass work that just adds the weight to the bands momentum….this is some rather decent headbang material that isn’t ‘brutal’ or ‘slamming’ by any means, and that is okay. We’re don’t always need death metal riffs and demonic screams to create a heavy song and Striker will show you 11 ways how to do it correctly. Probably the best heavy metal release of the year!!!! Best of material for sure! 8.5 out of 10
