møl’s simple return to us all is with 3 wonderfully written songs on this EP that is just called “II”. This “shoegaze metal” band is as interesting as it is majestic. Utilizing as much atmosphere as humanly possible, these gentlemen put out a sound that appeals to me as a black metal fan, post rock fan, shoegaze fan and as a sludge fan. This EP touches emotions and thoughts that expand way beyond what most metal can do and that is just my opinion when I get only half way through the first song. Wow! These guys have a phenomenal sound about them, very powerful without incorporating anything ‘brutal’ or ‘death’ within their compositions. It’s just brilliant.
First off, vocals have this raspy loud but distant sound to it. Definitely has a black metal inspired scowl to it and it oddly fits in perfectly with the whimsical magic happening from the instruments. Guitar riffing and post-rock/shoegaze workings are skin crawling stuff. As simple as it is, it’s highly effective and motivating. Some moments have an atmospheric black sound to it, so all of you Deafheaven fans should be able to flock to this stuff just as well.
Bass work is to die for, the sound is just so thick and enriched with groove but not overpowering the rest of the instruments, it’s the perfect level. Bass playing doesn’t get too crazy but does fill in what the guitars cannot accomplish. Drumming is a bi-polar mix of solid rapid fire blasting/double bass punishment or it could be somber and melancholic….it’s a fitting and enjoyable performance coming from the percussionist.
This EP is a very good release. A must have and easily one of those “Whoa I wasn’t expecting THIS!” right when you hit play. I enjoyed their last EP and I really do just love this EP. Wonderful stuff from møl, who desperately needs to write a full length now. Labels: sign this band!
