GNAW THEIR TONGUES Abyss Of Longing Throats COVERBeing new to the fabled one man act known as Gnaw Their Tongues, I approached this album with open ears and no expectations. What was to behold? What was to come? What was in store for me? Well as it turns out, this sampling of Gnaw Their Tongues known as Abyss of Longing Throats is an extreme case of black metal, doom metal, experimental metal and a slight case of industrial robotic atmosphere. Like wondering into an warehouse of rhythm, misanthropy and sickness…I plunge into this album head first.

First off, I am very interested in what I am hearing as soon as “Lick The Poison From The Cave Walls” starts as this experiemental blackened doom hits my ears. Like I mentioned above, GTT also has this drum sound that is very industrial in sound, like a gigantic robot working in a manufacturing plant. Not only does this build wild atmosphere but it certainly induces fear, this music is some scary stuff. While I certainly like what I am hearing (Especially “Through Flesh” and the title track song), I feel like Abyss of Longing Throats really only needs one or two listens and that is pretty much it.

There is very little redeeming quality coming out of here and only a couple of songs really stick out to me. Some moments on the album are neat but most of it drones on and is just murky background noise. Something odd you can listen to while focusing on other work. While it’s different and interesting, I really just can’t recall anything that truly stood out or knocked me on my ass. This is neat, easily….but not inspiring or meant to move me. Lot’s of dissonant noise, faint guitar annotations and psychotic moments on here with ramblings/screams that you cannot understand. This is more suitable as a drone album for a horror movie soundtrack….which is kinda neat in it’s own way.

Abyss of Longing Throats is cool but lost it’s charm pretty quick, which made me uninterested. If you’re wanting something that is crossing the styles of Darkspace, Author & Punisher and The Axis of Perdition then you’ll enjoy what Gnaw Their Tongues is doing. It’s high quality background noise and I do enjoy this album because it is mysterious, dark and very creative.

6.8 out of 10
